17 09 2009 | Ernst von Siemens-Auditorium in the Pinakothek der Moderne | Barer Str. 40 | 80333 München | 18.00 | free Entrance

While the development of modern architecture in Germany came to a sudden end with the seizure of power by the National Socialists, modern architecture continued in eastern Europe and became known as  Czech functionalism with Zlín as a testimonial of this epoch. The historian of architecture, Vladimír Šlapeta, puts the model town of modernism into the context of eastern European architecture.

Built in 1936, the Bat’a film studios in Zlín-Kudlov were an important instrument of Bat’a’s propaganda machinery. As the only place of entertainment, the largest cinema of central Europe stood in the centre of Zlín. Apart from company commercials, young film directors such as Alexander Hackenschmid , Elmar Klos, Karel Zemen and Herminá Tyrlová gained international recognition with documentaries, cartoons and feature films, that were also produced in Zlín-Kudlow.

Prolonged due to its great success:

The Art of Timber Construction – Chinese Architectural Models
Duration: 22 Oct.2009 – 28 Feb. 2010

Due to the great visitors’ interest the exhibition „The Art of Timber Construction – Chinese Architectural Models“ at the Architekurmuseum der TU München in the Pinakothek der Moderne will be prolonged until 28 Feb. 2010.

For the first time, the impressive capacious timber models from the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage in Peking are shown outside of China. They will be presented in Munich exclusively and thereafter will only be accessible to experts in China.

By means of some of the most important and oldest Chinese temple buildings this ancient art and technique of timber construction is presented and explained. The fascinating system of interlocking building components allows a  construction method that can even withstand earthquakes.

These temple buildings from the 8th to the 15th century, among them the models of the oldest Chinese timber constructions, such as the Nanchan temple, 782 AD,  the Foguang temple, 857 AD, the complex of the Yongle-Palace, consisting of four halls (1271-1368) as well as the 5-metre model of the 270 hectare Temple of Heaven-complex in Peking can now be visited until the end of February. Several of the constructions shown belong to the most famous works of world architecture, listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Guided tour by curator Irene Meissner:

Friedrich Achleitner is the most renowned Austrian publicist on architecture. He studied architecture with Clemens Holzmeister and was a member of the legendary „Vienna group“ with H. C. Artmann and Oswald Wiener. As an editor of the mulit-volume „Führer zur österreichischen Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert“ and an essayist and author he gained international acclaim. Achleitner submits Christian Jabornegg’s and András Pálffy’s „Building in Context“ to a careful examination and is asking questions concerning design criteria and the valuation of the coexistence of old and new.
