 In the summer of 1912 Marcel Duchamp stayed in Munich from 21 June for about three months. In a lecture later on he would comment that this was the place of his “complete liberation”. What he actually meant by this remark has since been disputed among scholars. However, it seems to be certain that Duchamp created or produced works during this time or immediately afterwards that were to change the art of the 20^th century fundamentally. The “Great Glass” and his ready-mades have radically challenged the function and meaning of art. 100 years later the two exhibition projects try to clarify what Duchamp’s stay in Munich made so art-historically important.

The Duchamp-experts invited for the symposium have particularly dealt with the paradigm shift of the visual arts based on Duchamp.

The symposium is organized by the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and the Architekturmuseum der TU München in cooperation with the Udo und Anette Brandhort Stiftung. It has been rendered possible by considerable funds of the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.

ZUR ÄSTHETIK MARCEL DUCHAMPS

The symposium deepens the positions of modern timber architecture demonstrated in the exhibition by outstanding architectural examples and at the same time refers to sustainable resources of ecological construction. Apart from work reports of the architects Helmut Dietrich (Bregenz), Florian Nagler (Munich), hiendl_schineis architektenpartnerschaft (Passau), Hubert Rieß (Graz) and Deppisch Architekten (Freising), a research report will be presented by Holger König (Munich), on the comparative eco-certification of five exhibited projects sponsored by the German environment foundation (Bundesstiftung Umwelt).

Building with timber has experienced a remarkable renaissance during the previous years, as it is one of the “greenest” building materials. Renewable, climate neutral, capable of load-bearing and durable, timber has an enormous potential to become the construction material of the future for Germany. There are eight billion trees in German forests, ca. one third of Germany’s total area being covered by them. Taking this into account, timber could contribute as a construction material to meet future challenges of our society. Computer-aided planning and assembly methods facilitate the economic production of a multi-faceted creative architecture. You will experience the exhibition together with Stefan Kaufmann. Subsequently, you will research new ways of planning in the digital laboratories of the Technische Universität München, create your own forms by means of a computer and realize them with a laser cutter. FORM FOLLOWS PRODUCIBILITY.

The Jacob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm-Centre with the central library of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, erected by Max Dudler, is one of the most renowned current library buildings. With typological references to Boullée and Schinkel, Dudler developed a house which gains its measures and thus its shape from its smallest module – the book. Dudler, professor at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf with architectural practices in Berlin, Zurich and Frankfurt, will lecture on the construction of libraries on the basis of his “houses for books” in Münster, Berlin, Essen and Speyer.

The underlying principle of crossing the lines becomes the subject of this architectural symposium. The list of experts invited by Peter Ebner (Los Angeles, Munich) in cooperation with the Architekturmuseum der TU München portrays an international and cross-genre field of architects, engineers and artists, their common ground being their love to experiment and the recognition of new currents as the lifeblood of developing processes. In their lectures they illustrate their specific focal point.

Gramazio & Kohler are investigating the future potential of digital design-, construction- and fabrication methods for architecture. For this purpose the architects have constructed a research facility with a computer-operated industrial robot at their department at the ETH Zurich. Some first robot-aided constructions have already been assembled, e.g. the timber construction of the ‘sequential wall’ or the brick installation at the Swiss Pavilion at the 11th Biennial of Architecture in Venice.

Professor Matthias Kohler will give a lecture in the course of the exhibition “Wendepunkt|e im Bauen – Von der seriellen zur digitalen Architektur”, presented until 13 June 2010.

The lecture will be held in German.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp) are currently planning and constructing stadiums worldwide. The architecture of the stadiums connects the choreography of the masses and the artistic identity with the respective “genius loci”. The functional achievement, the logical form of construction and the form of expression interpreting the specific site are merged into an aesthetic synthesis. Technology and art, form finding and transfer are combined to create works of self-evident architecture.

While the development of modern architecture in Germany came to a sudden end with the seizure of power by the National Socialists, modern architecture continued in eastern Europe and became known as  Czech functionalism with Zlín as a testimonial of this epoch. The historian of architecture, Vladimír Šlapeta, puts the model town of modernism into the context of eastern European architecture.

Built in 1936, the Bat’a film studios in Zlín-Kudlov were an important instrument of Bat’a’s propaganda machinery. As the only place of entertainment, the largest cinema of central Europe stood in the centre of Zlín. Apart from company commercials, young film directors such as Alexander Hackenschmid , Elmar Klos, Karel Zemen and Herminá Tyrlová gained international recognition with documentaries, cartoons and feature films, that were also produced in Zlín-Kudlow.

When Le Corbusier visited Zlín in 1935, he found his principles of a modern town already realized: „Zlín is a shining phenomenon. I have travelled the world a lot, but I still feel like in a new world when I am here.“ A Le Corbusier-expert and important French historian of architecture, Cohen reports about Le Corbusier’s projects for Bat’a.

Die Fotoausstellung basiert auf dem langfristigen Projekt: Eine Garage zum Verkaufen.
Auf s/w Fotografien reflektiert der Autor seine Umgebung, konkret die Wohnhäuser der Arbeiter von Bat’a in Zlín, die außerordentlich fotogen sind. Mit der Veränderung des Lebensstils der Bewohner verwandelt sich auch die Einrichtung, Disposition und Exterieur der Wohnhäuser: Einige davon existieren inzwischen sogar nicht mehr. Jedes Wohnhaus und seine Bewohner sind auf 3-6 Fotografien dargestellt.

Munich will see the start of three international colloquia on the subject „Modelle und Architektur“ (models and architecture). Renowned scientists, architects and engineers will present the current state of research in their respective countries and develop key aspects. Participating institutions – apart from the TU München and the École de Chaillot, Paris – will be the Ècole pratique des hautes études (EPHE) Sorbonne Paris as well as universities of Rome and Venice.
