Day of the Archives 2024March 2, 2024, starting 11:00 am

The architect Hans Döllgast (1891-1974) in the collection of the Museum of Architecture

The focus of the archive tour is the draughtsman, typographer, furniture designer, author, university lecturer and architect Hans Döllgast, who died 50 years ago on March 18, 1974 in Munich.

Hans Döllgast studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich from 1910 to 1914. He learned freehand drawing from Paul Pfann and watercolor painting from Friedrich von Thiersch. He masterfully developed these techniques up to his personal expression. After working with Richard Riemerschmid and Peter Behrens, Döllgast took on his first teaching assignments at TUM in 1929. In 1939 he was awarded an associate professorship and in 1942 a full professorship for "Freehand Drawing and Spatial Art". In the post-war period, Döllgast was one of the formative teaching personalities and taught visual arts and design subjects. As an architect, he is best known for saving historic buildings - including St. Bonifaz - during the reconstruction of Munich. He achieved an international retputation with the "creative restoration" of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
